the netherlands is one of the most wired countries....except, well, that missing fraction? my fam.

anyway. here in Haarlem, around 20 min train outside Amsterdam, and settling in, after a week of my oma and her brother and the nittery 80 year olds who think us 37 year olds are just HOPELESS and WILL STARVE DIE OR SET FIRE TO THEMSELVES if not watched. yeah. They didn't like leaving me at the house over night.

the news here is all frackered up over the shooting in Alpha Aan de Rijn, outside rotterdam? and basically it was a grand ol clusterfuckery of kid with psychiatric issues gets ahold of weapons and goes to a firing range, and yeah. the "winkelcentrums" are outdoor malls, so its kind of amazing he hit as few as he did, but yeah everyones tearing their hair out at various admin levels here.

Upside, as R noted, at least the victims aren't on the hook for the medical costs. Still stuff like this is evidently very rare.

And a guy set himself on fire in Dam Plaza in Amsterdam the day I arrived ( oh, gee, what?) and there's a huge floral thing there now, but yeah. I have decided I really don't need to be in the red light district. ITS ANNOYING IN THERE. I was brainlessly thinking a hotbed of tourists would have a freaking voda or T mobile spot but no.

We went to Zinzia http://www.zinzia.nl/locaties/oranje-nassaus-oord/introductie.html where one of oma's friends is, and man, if you HAVE to be in nursing care, this is luxe. No, really. Its fucking madness. Tho it sort of seems MOSt of the netherlands is elderly, or involved in eldercare, but thats mostly because most of my family ARE one or the other.

Emile's ok after his two rounds of deployment, ok I suppose in that he's less bubbly and he's got some stress-tics now. Everyone I know is returning damaged, so I'm SO over this nonsensical war shit, if I wasn't before.

Gonna study, and relax. I think I need a few days without Oma constantly nit nit nittering at me as if i'm impossibly stupid. Seriously, I could scrap this and go learn spanish or swahili or whatever.
