I've thought vaguely we should buy a sweet 2br condo here for some time and R's always been very hesitant, but after some discussion he seems to be warming to the idea since we can easily afford something modestly done, and while he was afraid of being saddled with repair costs, I pointed out "really, how often does the current rental ever need repair we can't manage ourselves? once a year, maybe?"

We may well be able to find something in the range of what we wanted costwise for the same as renting. We aren't having more kids, we don't need a yard, ( i loathe yard work with a passion. even my longing for a small townhouse, that is if you could even find one here that isn't 2 hrs out of the city proper and not half a mil) we like living downtown.

So many houses here are sprawling huge and its more work than I ever want to sign on for. I loved my small place in Haarlem, it was efficiently compact. I sort of dislike the layout of our current place, a hallway eats up so much space in bad layout, and the kitchen is appallingly small. Love the location, however.

Condo prices have remained somewhat not insane here, unlike vancouver so there is that. I remember how fast Vancouver's shot up as speculators and overseas investors would grab multitudes of them at a go, the rules have changed so spectator investors like that pay more down for a condo, so that the first time and resident buyers have a damn shot. Lots of rental stock is being built too, ( also unusual because no way would there be a rental tower in downtown new. Nope. But we got a few actually.)

So it means the housing market here is marginally less evil by not selling crackshack mansions fixer uppers that are sagging and rotting, for almost a mil.

I'd rather spend the next year looking for a good place and move, rather than move to a new rental then move again to a bought condo. We do need to move within the year though. That much we know. we both work downtown ( all the bench rental places are pretty much downtown. I'll continue to work from home and rent a bench 1-2x a week for work if need be.)
