Mar. 20th, 2010 09:01 pmWe went off to the Art Gallery of Ontario today and man, I'm blown away by the quality. I'd heard some odd gripes from reviews that it wasn't "all that", but they do have a very impressive collection of rembrant's sketches, picassos, Van gogh, and rodin's work.
And a chess set made by Salvador Dali. Tres weird, that. It's fingers and saltshakers.
For the kiddies they had the docents with art cards the kids could use to find the pieces in the museum. We got some. Awesome.
The tut exhibit was gorgeous but OH SO CROWDED. And people who took an age to read the captions, then another age to gawk, and it was kind of stifling hot in there. But seeing bits of stuff that are 500 BC is kind of fucked up head trippy awesome. Gorgeous jewelery!
We have a membership, which means we get front of the line for special exhibits and a year of visiting which is good because we barely went past the first floor.
Had a small lunch there, then walked down dundas to a decent thai place where it was satay chicken and mango salad and sticky rice with mango and some raspberry puree, yum.
I'll probably to to the ROM next week as it's right across from OISE ( ontario institute for studies in education, where my dutch classes are this week. Maybe they have decent coffee and I can browse an exhibit before going to class.
We got some postcards for an egyptophile friend, and a mummy rubber duckie for our herd.
I think I'm very lucky and spoiled at the museums and galleries I've been able to see, that it would almost sound pretentiously wanktastic to speak of it but wow. It's one thing to see these works in books but in person, we were in a gallery and we'd glance up at a painting and go "OH!" as we saw something that wasn't there on first glance.
